Peer Feedback Session

Research Question: To what extent does wordless image narrative influence an audience's perception of a story?

Themes: Language - spoken vs. visual - Universally understood, semiotics & sign theory. Composition 'rules'.

Proposed outcome/s or processes: 5 x single image narratives - Victorian ghost stories (theme).

FEEDBACK

What are your initial reactions to the research question?
  • The silent film angle is strong, does that seem like the focus that you'll continue with? - The journal analysing silent films is intriguing, really thorough. How will this translate into a final outcome? Picture book?
  • I'd like to know more about what you specifically mean by 'wordless image making'. Film specifically? Or will you be addressing other subject matters?
  • It has a solid direction, but is it too broad, does 'wordless image narrative' encompass too much?
  • Interesting - how do different genre's of text/moving image effect the outcome?
  • Look at Bayeux tapestry maybe?
  • Are you looking at silent films (wordless) or still images?
  • How will you judge the comparison of perception?

What are your initial reactions to the work?
  • I like the idea of single image narratives that you're planning to explore with the ghost stories.
  • Are you using the visual analysis of film to take into your single image narratives?
  • Very neat, well crafted images - demonstrate a high level of skill/consideration.
  • Very intriguing. However I don't see compositions yet - is that just being worked towards?

The relationship between the research question and the practical direction...
  • They definitely link together, the only part we found unclear was the use of the term 'wordless image narratives', but that's become clearer through looking at the practical.
  • Lots of guidance of investigation, experimentation and trials.
  • Clearly relevant, symbolism research.

The proposed outcome/s of the project...
  • It's practically achievable, and theoretically (the idea of condensing a story into a single image) is ambitious.
  • 5 is very ambitious - depending on how much symbolism practice you intend to do and the method you use to create the outcomes.
  • Are the images single images or layered compositions?
  • Have you considered how silent imagery works in graphic novels/comics?

What you think could be improved upon...
  • Synthesis might be able to be improved, the lines between theory and practice. Could the question be re-worded?
  • Taking symbolism from each film.

List 3 questions you have that have arisen from looking at the work so far...
  • How feasible is it to condense a whole narrative into one image?
  • How much of the narrative is 'character'?
  • How will you judge the perception?
  • What type of composition will you use for the final images?
  • Are you considering historical/biblical iconography? (in your final images)
