Visual Journal Proposal

For the Visual aspect of my research into print media and its effects on society, I am going to explore social hierarchy and the stereotypes of different classes within a community. I found this part of my initial research most interesting and I would like to explore more visually into the way we perceive people through how they dress and present themselves to the world. One of the topics I would like to focus on is Political protests and how class can identify the decision making behind them. I would also like to look into the way people view the homeless, and how they are overlooked by the majority of our society.
My intentions to achieve this are to research types of protests (specifically students), interview relevant people, alongside the stereotypes people paint towards upper and lower classes.
As my project question is based around print media, my intention is to create some of my own protest prints which depict the themes I have chosen to base my research on.

Mark Making

I want to concentrate on the actual marks I am making and the processes I may want to use as I continue with the investigation of hunting. Using coloured pencils is something I am enjoying for this part of my research - I feel like it mirrors the chaotic nature and fast pace of a hunt, also the use of red highlights danger for the fox in particular.

Workshop

Putting parts of the drawings I had already done and my essay together helped me to link them in my mind. I feel like I can clarify how to move forward with my visual journal in relation to what I have learned today of how to include themes within my essay but taking it in a different direction to my initial ideas.

Anti-Fox Hunting Imagery

Exploring the idea of fox hunting in relation to class, I started to pin point certain poster campaigns and replicate them in my own way. I liked the idea of including a fox like man as a sly character, swapping the roles of the fox and hunter could also be a concept to explore.

I acquired facts and figures that I could easily put into poster-like imagery. I think the good thing about this module is that I feel free to explore any element of the things I am finding out which is actually turning out to be quite interesting.

Protests - Fox Hunting

http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/03374/70610325_LONDON_EN_3374853b.jpg

There are arguments for either side of fox hunting. Tradition and sport come into play when looking at a lot of the pro-hunting campaigns. People seem to have been a bit more anarchic on the anti-hunting side, there is arguably no need for it to still be legal - it is just an outdated part of English heritage. Farmers however argue that conservation is key to the growth of their produce.

Fox Hunting - Class

I started to look at different events/etc that have happened that relate to class and differing opinions on certain issues. One that sprung to mind was the debates surrounding fox hunting and the separation of class. Many working class people have never come in to contact with the sport first hand, whereas people who a fox hunting ban may affect most probably have very strong and passionate views on such a matter - relating to tradition.
