For this task we were asked to go to the library and look up definitions, find two books that related to the topic of Social and Political upheaval and find a relevant image.
Definitions
Social - relating to society or its organisation.
Political - of or relating to the government or public affairs of a country.
Upheaval - a violent or sudden change or disruption to something.
Book 1 - 'When comics went to war' by Adam Riches
We found this image in particular to be very interesting in reference to the attitudes of the media and propaganda at the time of World War II. The hand drawn illustrations shown in the image are in a comic-book style, which would have been attractive to children.
There is a romanticised idea of war for those people at home who would not necessarily realise the brutality behind the image. Promotion of this idealistic view was a way of the media to feed unrealistic ideas of war to the public.
Book 2 - 'Media and Society' by Graeme Burton
We chose this book in order to gain more of an understanding of the function of the media and how it works within society.
Gaining an understanding of this first would be very helpful to be able to develop ideas on other aspects of this topic.
